Interview: Sérgio Fernandes, Development Director for IG CloudOps

How long have you worked here? Can you tell me more about your role and background?

My history with IG CloudOps has come a long way now. IG CloudOps was the first remote work I added in 2013, working for 3 years first as a developer and then as a team leader. Around 2016 I decided to take some time off and travel the world, so I was way for a couple of years. Back in 2018 I had lunch with Steve and in the middle of the conversation we talked about me returning to IG CloudOps and I said to him, “Steve I want to return ‘home',” and as they say the rest is history.

Right now, I am the Development Director running a small development team and reporting directly to Garry Forsyth.

 

How would you describe the work environment?

The atmosphere that permeates the office and in which we all participate, is an aspect of work in any company that is difficult to define concretely. It is not something objective but has to do with the individual employee's subjective experience. Even when we work from home, we are always in contact via Teams, so it seems like we are at an office, same atmosphere, same feeling.

How would you describe the work ethic?

The work ethic at IG CloudOps is one of hard work and dedication. Our team is focused on delivering quality products and services to our clients, and we believe that having the right personality traits is essential to achieving this goal. We are looking for individuals who are motivated to learn and grow, and who are willing to work hard to contribute to our team's success.

What is the reporting structure like?

At IG CloudOps we have a straightforward way of reporting, no big structures with several levels of reporting. In my case I report directly to my Product Directory (Garry Forsyth) and because we use Agile methodologies for CloudOps product development everyone on the team knows their own tasks and what needs to be done on that development sprint.

What is the commitment to professional development?

At IG CloudOps, we offer a high level of support to our employees. We believe that our team is our most valuable asset, and we are committed to helping them succeed. We are committed to supporting our employees in every way possible.

How does management view risks?

I do believe that the management team cover the risks very well, and one of the examples was during COVID time. We kept working always as team (even more by then), supporting each other. No one was laid off and there weren’t any pay check cuts.

When people make mistakes, how is that handled?

When mistakes are made, we work to learn from them and prevent them from happening again in the future. We believe that mistakes are opportunities for learning and growth, and we use them as such. We also believe that it is important to be honest when mistakes are made, and to take responsibility for them. This allows us to learn from our mistakes and build trust with our clients and partners.

How does management view such areas as work-life balance?

We have a hybrid approach to work, a couple of days at the office and a couple days at home. I really like that approach because you can have a great work-life balance. Also, if you need some time off for a doctor’s appointment or to help a family member that is not a problem at IG CloudOps, just address you manager some time previous and explain the situation.
